AeroSentinel™ – Tethered High-Altitude Detection & Intercept Platform
A Kaizen Labs Aerostat Initiative & collaborations with Bohdan Hlavatskyi, Viktor Koldun
Keeping Watch from Above – Where the Air is Clear and the View is Better
Project Overview:
We’re developing the AeroSentinel – a tethered aerostat platform that maintains persistent overwatch at 1-2km altitude. This “eye in the sky” serves as both an elevated acoustic detection post and a rapid-response drone deployment platform. Think of it as a floating watchtower that never needs to land.
Because the best defense is a higher perspective.
🎈 Our Mission:
Build a prototype tethered aerostat system that:
- Maintains station-keeping at 1-2km altitude for weeks
- Hosts our Rockoustic Sentinel acoustic detection suite
- Serves as aerial launch platform for interceptor drones
- Provides persistent surveillance with minimal ground footprint
- Operates silently with near-zero detectability
Funding Goal: $5,000 – To build and test our first operational prototype
📐 System Architecture:
The Platform:
Aerostat Envelope:
- Hydrogen-filled polyethylene construction
- 14-20 meter length for 25-30kg total payload capacity
- Aerodynamic shape for stability in 40+ knot winds
- Pressure-regulation system for day/night thermal cycling
Tether System:
- High-strength Dyneema/Spectra composite line
- Integrated power transmission (optional)
- Data fiber for real-time communication
- Automated tension management and winch control
Payload Configurations:
Configuration A: “Silent Listener”
- Elevated Rockoustic Sentinel acoustic array
- 360° acoustic detection at 500m+ range
- Wind-noise cancellation algorithms
- Mesh networking with ground-based units
Configuration B: “Sky Garrison”
- 2-4 interceptor drones in ready-launch cradles
- Automated release mechanisms
- Quick-response deployment (< 5 seconds to launch)
- Drone charging/maintenance while stationed
Configuration C: “Full Overwatch”
- Combined acoustic detection + drone deployment
- Integrated threat assessment and response
- Autonomous intercept capability
- Human-in-the-loop override options
🎯 Why AeroSentinel Changes the Game:
Traditional Ground-Based Systems:
- Limited detection range due to terrain
- Vulnerable to ground-level interference
- Easily avoided once located
- Require multiple units for area coverage
The AeroSentinel Advantage:
- 10x detection area from elevated position
- Persistent presence – weeks of continuous operation
- Rapid response – interceptors already at altitude
- Minimal footprint – one tether point covers vast area
- Silent operation – no motors, no heat signature
📊 Technical Specifications:
Performance Metrics:
- Operational altitude: 1-2km AGL (Above Ground Level)
- Station-keeping: ±50m in 35 knot winds
- Endurance: 30+ days between servicing
- Payload capacity: 25-30kg at 2km altitude
- Coverage area: 50+ km² per unit
- Response time: 5 seconds from detection to interceptor launch
Lift Calculations (Refined for 1-2km):
At 1-2km altitude, air density reduction is only ~15%, giving us:
- 2.3 kg lift per meter of balloon
- More efficient than our 4km calculations
- Better stability in weather conditions
- Easier tether management
🚁 Integrated Interceptor System:
The AeroSentinel serves as a “carrier in the sky” for interceptor drones:
Launch Advantages:
- Drones start at altitude – no climb needed
- 360° launch capability
- Multiple simultaneous deployments
- Gravity-assisted initial acceleration
- Return-to-aerostat capability (stretch goal)
Intercept Scenarios:
- Detect incoming threat via acoustics
- Calculate intercept vector
- Deploy drone(s) on collision course
- All happening 1-2km above ground level

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How does it handle bad weather? A: Designed for 40+ knot winds. In extreme weather, we can winch down to lower altitude or ground. The system includes lightning protection and ice-prevention measures.
Q: What about air traffic? A: Equipped with aviation lighting and radar reflectors. We coordinate with local aviation authorities and can operate in restricted airspace.
Q: How visible is it? A: At 1-2km, it’s about the size of a small aircraft to ground observers. We offer low-visibility materials for reduced detection.
Q: Can the tether be cut? A: Dyneema tether is extremely cut-resistant, and we monitor tether integrity continuously. Emergency recovery systems activate if tether is compromised.
Why Back This Project?
Traditional detection systems are fighting yesterday’s threats from yesterday’s positions. The AeroSentinel lifts defense capabilities to where they need to be – above the noise, above the obstacles, and ready to respond.
This isn’t just altitude – it’s attitude. The attitude that says “we see you coming from 50km away, and we’re ready.”
Note: This is an R&D project pushing the boundaries of persistent aerial surveillance and rapid response. While based on proven aerostat principles, integrating acoustic detection and drone deployment at altitude presents novel challenges we’re excited to solve.
Rise Above with AeroSentinel
